SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Health) - For people with lung cancer who are not candidates for surgery or radiotherapy, a combination of laser and drug therapy appears to be an effective treatment, according to a report presented here Monday at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
``Overall, lung cancer, while it is not the most common cancer...is the most common cause of cancer death, with a mortality rate of about 90%, and this has remained the same for the last decade,'' Dr. Neil A. Christie from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, told Reuters Health.
``However, if we find early cancers, they are highly curable. With new techniques including the laser-drug combination, known as photodynamic therapy, we can treat these cancers and cure them in a noninvasive manner,'' Christie explained.
Christie's team treated seven patients, who had a total of 10 tumors, with photodynamic therapy.
``Seven of 10 lesions had a durable complete response (after) 30.75 months,'' according to Christie and colleagues.
According to Christie, the main problem is identifying cancers in the early stages. To deal with this problem, he recommends resurrecting screening for lung cancer., http://www.100md.com
