Officials of the Ministry of Health said the medical communication network will provide long-distance counselling and treatment on illnesses for most patients throughout the country. The "golden Health Medical Network Project" will also launch several types of personal health cards in May through banks that will record detailed health data of card holders and serve as a reference for the accurate and quick diagnosis and treatment of health problems, according to Lin Yinghua from the Golden Health Medical Network Corp , which is in charge of establishing and operating the network under the Ministry of Health. The health card, a laser information carrier that has the same size as a name card can save character and image information and can also be used to settle payments. The "golden health medical network" will initially cover 20 hospitals in 15 cities in May, and expand to 80 medical units by the end of the year. By the end of the year 2000, it will include a total of 500. The final goal is to link up with all hospitals above the county level as well as some of the township hospitals said liu. Apart from long-distance medical consulting, this information service will hold nation-wide television conferences and carry out professional training and international exchange programmes. There are currently more than 60.000 hospitals in the country. About 80 per cent of the health resources ,including highly skilled doctors and specialized medical equipment, are concentrated in hospitals in larger cities. Quite a number of the rural population can not receive immediate treatment for their illnesses, especially many difficult cases. Many people travel to big city hospitals to have their diseases diagnosed and cured, which is time-consuming and expensive, often requiring additional expense for transportation and accommodations. The latest survey among 2,000 medical practitioners and 6,000 residents in five provinces suggests that 91 per cent of the hospital administrative personnel also want to join the "Golden Health Medical Network" in order to acquire the latest information worldwide on medicine and health. More than 75 per cent of the hospitals surveyed believed they were mature enough to participate in the network, and 96 per cent of the residents welcomed the system., 百拇医药
