WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) - In a case-control study of myocardial infarction in smokers, treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of a first MI.

Modulation of serotonin-mediated platelet activation might account for the effect, and its magnitude is "consistent with the effect seen with other antiplatelet agents," lead researcher Dr. Stephen E. Kimmel of the University of Pennsylvania told Reuters Health.

He and his Philadelphia colleagues report the finding in the October 16th issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. "SSRIs have an antiplatelet effect that has been linked to higher gastrointestinal bleeding rates," Dr. Kimmel commented. "A reduction in platelet clotting may, like aspirin, reduce the risk of a myocardial infarction," he said.

The researchers compared 653 smokers with a first MI with 2990 randomly selected control subjects who were also smokers but who had no history of a prior heart attack. After adjusting for confounding factors, including number of cigarettes smoked per day, aspirin use, and family history of MI, the 143 SSRI users had a significantly reduced odds ratio of 0.35 for MI compared with SSRI nonusers (p, http://www.100md.com
