Assertive Girls More Likely to Insist on Condoms
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Using condoms during sexual activity can be life saving, but according to results of a new study conducted among sexually active African-American adolescent girls, consistent condom use may depend on how assertive the girl is and how well she demonstrates negotiating skills.
``Prevention programs should seek to build adolescents‘ skills in negotiating condom use,‘‘ Dr. Catlainn Sionean of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) in Atlanta, Georgia, told Reuters Health.
Sionean and colleagues at Emory University in Atlanta interviewed over 500 sexually active females, aged 14 to 18, to determine the factors associated with consistent condom use.
The investigators found that girls were more than twice as likely to use condoms consistently if they had little or no fear of negative reprisals from their partners.
The authors also report that girls with partners of similar age were twice as likely to use condoms regularly, compared with those who had older sexual partners.
Sexual risk reduction programs should help young women develop the skills needed to refuse sex unless condoms are used, the researchers suggest.
The findings were presented Tuesday at the National STD Prevention Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.,
