马萨诸塞州波士顿市塔夫兹大学大学的阿威瓦·麦斯特博士认为:青春期产生很多生理的和内分泌的改变,是发生肥胖的关键时期。男孩在这个期间主要增长的是肌肉,而女孩子增加的却是脂肪。她在加利福尼亚州长滩举行的北美肥胖研究协会年会上报告了她的发现。
麦斯特博士介绍道,尽管不同种族女性的月经初潮,也就是月经期开始的年龄有很大差异,但仍无确切证据表明月经初潮的平均年龄在减小。不过,初潮早的女孩,确实存在童年肥胖的危险。初潮早容易引起儿童肥胖,而这又增加了成年肥胖的机会。如果说初潮早是肥胖发生的一个关键时期的话,那么就应该针对这些女孩采取预防和治疗肥胖的措施。

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Girls who start their menstrual periods at a young age face a higher risk of becoming obese as adolescents and adults, researchers report.
Puberty, with its myriad physical and hormonal changes, is a critical period in the development of obesity. While boys are adding muscle during these years, girls are putting on fat, according to Dr. Aviva Must from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Scheduled to present her findings at the annual meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity in Long Beach, California, Must reflected on conflicting data concerning the younger ages at which girls may be maturing.
Although there are striking racial differences in the age at which menarche--the onset of menstrual periods--begins, she told Reuters Health, there is no good evidence that the average age of maturation is really dropping.

Nevertheless, for girls who do begin their periods earlier, childhood obesity is a real risk. ``Early menarche may be a small step along the way to childhood obesity, and childhood obesity often gives rise to adult obesity,‘‘ Must said.
