Educators Say Oral Sex Increasing Among Teens
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Fear of AIDS (news - web sites) and pregnancy have caused many adolescents to refrain from sexual intercourse. But increasingly, today‘s teens may be engaging in other types of sexual behavior--such as oral sex--that can pose health risks as well, study results suggest.

Nearly half of 15- to 19-year-old males said they had received oral sex in 1995, up from just under 44% in 1988, study findings indicate. And 53% said they had been ``masturbated‘‘ by a female in 1995, compared with 40% in 1988.
About 40% said they had given oral sex and 11% said they had engaged in anal sex in 1995, according to the report in the November/December issue of Family Planning Perspectives, published by The Alan Guttmacher Institute.

Researchers Gary J. Gates and Freya L. Sonenstein, from The Urban Institute in Washington, DC, point out that this study ‘‘underlines the importance of monitoring a broad spectrum of sexual behaviors among teenagers.... Measuring risk for STD infections among teenagers requires attention to all forms of genital sexual activity,‘‘ they add.
But exactly what types of behaviors teenagers are engaging is not well understood, explains Lisa Remez, associate editor of Family Planning Perspectives, in an article accompanying the study. While media reports have indicated that many adolescents are engaging in oral sex, research on the subject is sketchy.

Clinicians, meanwhile, give conflicting reports of sexual activity among teens. Some say they have not seen a rise in the rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) acquired noncoitally; others say they are seeing new types of infections.
In either case, teens engaging in oral sex do not seem to be aware that the practice can spread STDs.
Furthermore, many teens view oral sex as ``something you can do with some one you‘re not as intimate with, while intercourse is...reserved for that special person.‘‘ One educator said that girls sometimes view oral sex as a way to avoid pregnancy, diseases and stay in control.

Health experts suggest that parents and educators need to teach adolescents about the potential risks of a wide range of sexual behaviors.
``When we, as adults, tell our children to abstain from sex, we might as well be speaking a different language,‘‘ said Sara Seims, president of The Alan Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization that focuses on reproductive health. ``This report makes it clear that our society‘s narrow focus in policy and research is missing a major component--noncoital, early sexual activity among teenagers.‘‘
