It‘s Official: Exercise Saves Diabetics‘ Lives
, http://www.100md.com What you don‘t do can most definitely hurt you. Indeed, it could kill you.
Confirming what has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes treatment, Texas researchers say men with the blood sugar problem are twice as likely to die early if they don‘t exercise.
The study, which appears in the latest issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, comes as no surprise to doctors, who have long recommended physical activity as a way to help diabetics rein in unruly blood glucose. But the findings are among the first to convincingly demonstrate that this approach indeed saves lives.

The researchers, from the Cooper Institute in Dallas, studied the effects of exercise on death rates in more than 1,200 middle-aged men with Type II, or adult-onset, diabetes. Type II diabetes, in which cells stop responding to the sugar processing hormone insulin, is the most common form of the condition, affecting an estimated 15 million Americans.
After an average of 12 years of follow-up, men who performed poorly on heart stress tests were roughly twice as likely to die during the study as those who said they were active, the researchers found. Those who were inactive had about 70 percent higher risk of premature death, particularly from heart trouble, cancer, gastric disease and complications from their diabetes.

The effect of sedentary living on mortality was almost as great when the researchers adjusted for various factors, including family history of diabetes, whether they smoked and if they weighed too much.
"Regular physical activity was associated with lower mortality in men with Type II diabetes," says Dr. Ming Wei, a Cooper Institute scientist and the study‘s lead author. "Regular" workouts usually mean 30 minutes a day at least three times a week.

Even modest exercise, like brisk walking, helps in a number of ways, says Wei. "It increases heart function, lowers blood glucose" and improves the body‘s balance of blood fats, he says.
Although his study was only conducted in men, Wei says women with diabetes should reap the same benefits from exercise.
Dr. Robert Sherwin, a Yale University diabetes specialist and president-elect of the American Diabetes Association, says the latest study "sends a much clearer message" about the importance of regular exercise in diabetes treatment.

"We as physicians tend to think of exercise as a way of maintaining weight and effecting weight reduction, and we don‘t think of it quite as clearly as having a benefit for life expectancy."
Sherwin also notes that exercise helps diabetics of all ages, not just older adults. Doctors have watched with alarm as the incidence of Type II diabetes among young children and teens has ballooned in recent years.
The condition among this group is also strongly linked to obesity and inactivity, says Sherwin, but the consequences and costs of getting diabetes at age 16 instead of 56 are much greater.

What To Do
If you have Type II diabetes, don‘t rush out to the gym for a sweat-soaked workout without first checking with your doctor, Sherwin warns. Many diabetics suffer from serious cardiovascular problems that could make sudden, intensive exercise a bad idea.
On the other hand, he says, moderate activity shouldn‘t be a problem for any patient, and, as the latest study shows, it can be lifesaving.
