NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Men may be toughing out the pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, which could explain why more women report suffering from the condition, Italian researchers suggest in the May issue of the journal Epidemiology.
Despite the fact that men and women seem to perform the same types of tasks in equal numbers, fewer men than women are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, Dr. L. Padua and colleagues from the Italian Carpal Tunnel Study Group explain.

In a study of 740 patients conducted in 1997, men complained less of discomfort and had better hand function than women, but assessment of nerve function showed that the men actually had more severe impairment, the authors note.
``Men may seek medical attention only when carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms become severe; thus, less severe cases remain undiagnosed,‘‘ the researchers write.
``We postulate that the occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome in the male population is underestimated,‘‘ Padua and colleagues conclude.

Swelling in the wrist compresses nerves that travel from the forearm to the hand through a ``tunnel‘‘ in the wrist. Treatment includes painkillers, braces, steroid injections into the joint, and surgery to ``release‘‘ the ligament that runs through the tunnel and puts pressure on nerves.
