二十二碳六烯酸和花生四烯酸可明显提高婴儿的智力发育
Researchers have published datashowing that term infants fed a specific formulation of two essential fattyacids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA), demonstrated asignificant, quantifiable improvement in mental development.
Researchers have long hypothesized that DHA and AA, which are both present inmothers‘ milk, play a critical role in the mental development of infants. Selectinfant formulas sold in more than 60 countries worldwide, including most ofEurope, contain DHA and AA, but they are not found in formulas sold in theUnited States and Canada. This study was conducted by researchers at the RetinaFoundation of the Southwest in Dallas, TX, and sponsored by the NationalInstitute of Child Health and Human Development of the National Institutes ofHealth. The findings were published in the March issue of Developmental Medicine& Child Neurology.

In this randomized, double-blind clinical trial, infants supplemented with DHAand AA received a special, well studied formulation of these two nutrientsdesigned to closely match that found naturally in mothers‘ milk. At 18 months ofage, infants in the supplemented group demonstrated a mean increase of 7 pointson the Mental Development Index (MDI) of the Bayley Scales of Infant DevelopmentII. Researchers reported that "these data support a long-term cognitiveadvantage of infant dietary DHA supply during the first 4 months of life. Thesignificant correlations ...support the hypothesis that early dietary supply ofDHA was a significant determinant of improved performance on the MDI." Inaddressing the 7-point increase on the MDI, researchers further reported that,"7 points represents a significant shift in the mean performance of a cohort ofchildren."

"We are continuing to learn about the importance of proper nutrition on thedeveloping brain in the very young, including the role of nutrients such as DHAand AA," stated Dr. William Sears, Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics atthe University of California School of Medicine and practicing pediatrician. "Asa community of concerned parents, we must ensure that young infants receiveevery advantage they can to support this growth and development."
Dr. Sears is also the author of the recently released The Family Nutrition Book, and a long-time proponent of adding DHA and AA to infant formulas.

"We have long recognized the importance of DHA and AA to the mental and visualdevelopment of infants," stated Barbara S. Levine, Ph.D., R.D., Director of theNutrition Information Center and Co-Director of the Human Nutrition Program, both at The Rockefeller University, New York. "We are so pleased to now see theemergence of key clinical data supporting this important cause."
A previous evaluation of the same study population showed that infants receivinga diet supplemented with DHA and AA had an improved visual performance at 12months of age using Sweep VEP acuity testing. (Published in Pediatric Research1998, 44:201-209.) According to researchers, the visual improvement demonstratedin this previous evaluation was equivalent to one line on an eye chart.

The brain is 60 percent lipid in content, and DHA and AA are major lipidcomponents of the brain. During pregnancy, mothers mobilize DHA and AA tosupport brain development. Mothers continue to provide this important "brainfood" through their milk.
Although there are different sources of DHA and AA, today‘s findings reaffirmthe beneficial effects of adding these sources of pre-formed DHA and AA toinfant formulas at the levels evaluated by the researchers. In more than 30clinical trials, DHA and AA supplementation has proven safe.
The DHA and AA used in this study were derived from vegetarian sources andmanufactured by Martek Biosciences Corporation of Columbia, MD, USA. Thesepreparations represent the closest match to the forms of DHA and AA in mothers‘milk., 百拇医药
