    Effects of ulinastatin combined with panax notoginseng saponins on oxygen free radicals in rats with acute pancreatitis

    Abstract

    AIM: To investigate the effects of ulinastatin combined with panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) on oxygen free radicals in rats with acute pancreatitis (AP).

    METHODS: Seventy-five Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five equal groups: group A (sham-operated), B (AP), C (treated with ulinastatin), D (treated with panax notoginseng saponins) and E (treated with ulinastatin combined with panax notoginseng saponins). A rat model of AP was created by retrogression injection of sodium taurocholate though pancreas biliferous ducts. Serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in each experimental group were observed at 3, 6 and 12 h.

    RESULTS: The level of SOD in group B decreased while the MDA increased. Levels of SOD in groups C and D were higher than that in group B (274.750 ± 14.44 U/L and 281.420 ± 16.48 U/L vs 204.440 ± 14.87 U/L, P < 0.05) while the levels of MDA were lower (6.85 ± 0.65 µmol/L and 6.78 ± 0.56 µmol/L vs 9.25 ± 0.22 µmol/L, P < 0.05).
