Abstract
AIM: To investigate the expression of β-catenin and nm23-H1 protein in gastric carcinoma, and to determine its clinicopathological significance in the invasion and metastasis of gastric carcinoma.
METHODS: Sixty-three paraffin-embedded specimens of gastric carcinoma and 30 of chronic superficial gastritis were investigated immunohistochemically.
RESULTS: The positive rate for β-catenin expression in gastric carcinoma was 49.2% while for nm23-H1 it was 55.6%. Expression of both was markedly higher than that in chronic superficial gastritis. The expression of β-catenin was notably increased in gastric carcinoma with lymph node metastasis compared to that without lymph node metastasis (60.5% vs 32.0%, P < 0.05), and the rate was markedly higher in low-differentiation regions of gastric carcinoma than in high-differentiation ones (63 ......
