Abstract
AIM: To assess the feasibility and safety of laparoscopy for treatment of mechanical intestinal obstruction.
METHODS: Thirty patients with mechanical intestinal obstruction underwent laparoscopic treatment. The etiology of the mechanical intestinal obstruction was: intestinal adhesion (n = 18), internal hernia (n = 1), volvulus (n= 1), intussusception induced by diverticulum of the small intestine (n = 1), intestinal stromal tumor (n = 3), small colorectal cancer (n = 1), inflammatory bowel disease (n = 3), and colon cancer (n = 2).
RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients were successfully treated by laparoscopy; 17 of these underwent a laparoscopic operation, and 11 underwent a laparoscopy-assisted procedure. Conversion to a laparotomy occurred in two patients because of serious adhesions. Operation time for the 28 patients who were successfully treated ranged from 30 to 200 minutes. After their operation, patients felt less pain and recovered quicker than usual, and bowel function recovered within 1–2 days ......
