Abstract
AIM: To observe the expression of cytokeratin 19 (CK19) and subtractive gene P02 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), cirrhosis of the liver and oval cells.
METHODS: An immunohistochemical streptavidin–peroxidase method was used to examine the expression of CK19 in eight normal livers, 27 with cirrhosis, and 43 HCC samples. A DIG Probe Synthesis kit was used to prepare a P02 probe using a polymerase chain reaction, and in situ hybridization was used to detect the expressions of subtractive gene P02 in 15 pairs of specimens from HCC and liver cirrhosis, and in oval cells.
RESULTS: The positive rate for CK19 in cirrho sis of the liver was not significantly different to that for the control group. There were significant differences between HCC and cirrhosis of the liver (69.77 vs 25.93%, P < 0.01).
