Abstract
AIM: To investigate the distribution patterns and proliferative activity of lymphatic vessels in gastric cancer and their relationship with lymphatic metastasis and clinicopathological features.
METHODS: Lymphatic microvessel density (LMVD) in tumorous areas of 56 cases of gastric cancer and non-tumorous areas of 12 corresponding normal tissues were immunohistochemically evaluated using a monoclonal antibody for podoplanin. Ki-67 protein expression of the lymphatic lining cells was simultaneously detected by double-labeling immunohistochemistry. The distribution patterns and the relationship between LMVD and clinicopathological features were analyzed.
RESULTS: Intratumoral lymphatic vessels, which were not often seen, had ill-defined lumina, while peritumoral lymphatic vessels had large and open lumina. LMVD at peritumoral regions were significantly more prevalent than at intratumoral areas and normal gastric submucosa (11 ......
