    Abstract

    AIM: To examine the expression of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC and TFF1 in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas and its significance.

    METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC and TFF1 in nine surgically resected specimens with different histological subtypes of IPMN.

    RESULTS: The positive rates of MUC1, MUC2 and MUC5AC in all IPMNs were 44.4%, 66.7% and 100%, respectively. The common expression patterns of MUCs in different histological subtypes were: gastric type (MUC1–, MUC2–, MUC5AC+), intestinal type (MUC1–, MUC2+, MUC5AC+), and oncocytic type (MUC1+, MUC2+, MUC5AC+). Ductal type invasive carcinomas associated with IPMNs were MUC1+, whereas colloid carcinomas were MUC2+. MUC5AC and TFF1 were co-localized in IPMNs, and reduced expression appeared in invasive components. Gastric type IPMNs sometimes merged with other IPMN subtypes, and transition between different epithelia was present, implying that the gastric type might be a precursor of the other subtypes.

    CONCLUSION: Different IPMN subtypes have their own MUC expression pattern. MUC1 suggests aggressive behavior, MUC2 is associated with colloid carcinoma, and MUC5AC and TFF1, which were co-expressed, might be protective factors ......
