Abstract
AIM To assess the correlation between CD44 expression and gastric cancer.
METHODS CD44 content in tumor cells and peripheral blood of 37 patients with malignant and 14 patients with benign gastric polyps were detected by immuno-flow cytometry and compared with the blood of 20 normal controls.
RESULTS CD44 contents were similar in tumor tissues and peripheral blood in patients with benign gastric polyps and in normal subjects (P>0.05), but were much higher in malignant tumors (P<0.01). In patients with metastasis, they were significantly higher than those without (P<0.01). One month after radical operation on patients without metastasis, the CD44 contents in the peripheral blood reduced to the normal level (P>0.05), but neither radical nor palliative operation resulted in normal CD44 level in patients with gastric cancer with metastasis (P>0.05). ......
