Effect of Astragalus membranaceus on intestinal blood flow and motility in dogs

Abstract
AIM To study effect of Astragalus membranaceus on intestinal blood flow and motility.
METHODS Different concentrations of Astragalus membranaceus (10%, 30% and 50%) were placed into intestinal lumen of 10 healthy mongrel dogs to observe their effects on intestinal blood flow and motility using electromagnetic flowmeter and pressure transducer, and compared with normal saline.
RESULTS Astragalus membranaceus significantly or very significantly increased intestinal blood flow (ml·min-1·100-1) to 54.85±11.86~73.55±12.40, compared with 42.56±9.34~43.15±10.23 of normal saline (P<0.05 or <0.01), significantly enhanced intestinal muscular tension (kPa) to 0.70±0.27~0.95±0.39, compared with 0.44±0.21~0.51±0.22 of normal saline (P<0.05), and significantly raised intestinal motility amplitude (mv) to 10.53±2.37~12.04±3.37, compared with 6.25±2.31~6.44±2.18 of normal saline (P<0.05).
