Radiofrequency interstitial thermal ablation lesions in pig liver

Abstract
AIM To propose an optimal technique for radiofrequency liver ablation (RFA) to create larger lesions and study the morphological and histologic characteristics of radiofrequency liver ablations.
METHODS Using RF2000 radiofrequency generator and the LeVeen Needle Electrode, we peformed radiofrequency thermal ablation (RFA) on five pig livers at varying power settings including 30, 50, 70 and 90W, single-phase ablation (initial power at 50W and then 10W increments every minute to 90W) and two-phase ablation (after phase 1, it was stopped for 30 seconds and restarted in place at 75% of last power). Local temperatures were monitored during RFA and all lesions were examined both grossly and histologically. The extent of necrosis was assessed by HE staining and NADH-diaphorase staining. ......
