Immunohistochemical study of esophageal basaloid squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract
AIM To probe the biological features of basaloid-squamous carcinoma (BSC) of esophagus.
METHODS Using ABC method to perform immunohistochemistry for 8 BSC cases by different antibodies: CK4, CK18, CK19, EMA, CEA, SMA, S-100, LN, ColⅣ, NSE, PCNA and P53.
RESULTS BSC had 2 different cell components: basaloid cell (BC) and squamous cell (SC), and they had completely different reactions to the above antibodies. In the majority of BC (7 cases), they had positive reaction to CK19 specifically, while to the other 4 epithelial antibodies they had negative results. There were 4 cases of BC in which SMA and S-100 (antibodies related to muscle cells) were positive. The hyaline like substance inside the cancer cell nests was LN and ColⅣ positive. BC had rather high PCNA index (54% on average), while SC had lower PCNA index (25% on average). In SC the epithelial related antibodies CK4, EMA, CEA were positive, while CK19, SMA, S-100 were negative. ......
