In the performance of all major operations and many minor ones，nursing assistance is needed in two distinct areas：within the sterile field and outside the sterile field. The person whose work is confined to the sterile field is called either the scrub，instrument，su-ture or sterile nurse. This person scrubs hands and arms，dons sterile gown and gloves，and assists within the sterile field.The person whose work is outside the sterile field acts as the circulating nurse.In this capacity the nurse controls and directs activities outside the sterile field，keeps the sterile table supplied with items needed，and gives direct patient care.
