    Abstract:AIM To evaluate the availability of colon as an esophageal substitute for benign diseases of esophagus.METHODS Forty medical records of patients underwent colonic interposition for esophageal replacement because of benign esophageal diseases at Tangdu Hospital from Novem-ber1979to March2000were reviewed，including caustic in-jury in36，congenital stricture in3and esophagogastric anas-tomotic stricture in1for achalasia of esophagus.RESULTS There had been one death postoperatively in this group mak-ing an overall mortality of2.5%.The total complication rate after operation was57.5%(23/40).The most common com-plication was cervical anastomotic leak occurring in12of40cases(30%).The postoperative living quality of all the pa-tients in this group was admirable.CONCLUSION Because of the low mortality(2.5%)and the satisfactory outcome in the series，we believe that the colon interposition for substi-tute of esophagus is an alternative option for patients with be-nign esophageal diseases.
