Abstract
AIM: To investigate therelationship between nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB)and the occurrence of ulcerative colitis (UC), and to explore the role ofNF-kB expressionin steroid resistance of UC.
METHODS: Theactivation of NF-kBwas investigated in the UC biopsies from 15 steroid-resistant cases of the20 steroid-sensitive patients with an acute episode of moderate or severeUC. Sixteen normal persons were used as controls.
RESULTS:Before the steroid treatment, the expression of NF-kBp65 were significantly different between the steroid-resistant patientsand the normal controls (6.1 ± 2.9 vs 1.1 ± 0.8, P <0.01), as well as between the steroid-sensitive patients and the normalcontrols (5.9 ± 2.7 vs 1.1 ± 0.8, P < 0.01). There wasno significant difference between the steroid-sensitive group and thesteroid-resistant group before the steroid treatment (P > 0.05),while there was significant difference between them after the steroidtreatment (1.3 ± 0.8 vs 5.4 ± 2.4, P < 0.01).
