The signing ceremony of the "audiology cooperation project" between Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Institute of Medical Sciences and the Australian Cochlear Prosthesis Company was held in Beijing recently. The Australian side invested 3 million yuan for this project to cooperate in the scientific research, education and training programs of audiology in China, so that the project with cooperation of both sides already in a period of 6 years would be accelerated.

According to statistical investigation, the total number of persons with audile language disorders in mainland regions is approximately 28 million with a prevalence rate of 2.18 %, among them there are 4 million children and 1.6 million elderly. Along with the aging of the Chinese population, there will be a further increase of the persons with audile language disorders. At present, the technique of auditory reconstruction surgery in China has gradually got into the international network. To date, nearly 300 cases had the implantation of cochlear prosthesis at Beijing Tongren Hospital, and most of the patients were children, the youngest was only 17 months of age, including the first case of cochlear prosthesis implantation in children in China. Following speech rehabilitation training postoperatively, all the patients had obtained satisfactory results.

This time the audiology cooperation project will expand to an even broader domain, including the preparatory establishment of the audiology speciality with master degree, the launching of a training program in audiology for the physicians and speciality technicians, and cooperative implementation of the new topics of scientific research including "A system of evaluation of Chinese Standard Language". Speeding up of the cooperative program will powerfully promote the research of clinical practice enabling more patients suffering from deafness profited from the achievements of scientific research of audiology and the technique of cochlear prosthesis., http://www.100md.com
