It was learnt from the Third Coordination Conference for the Aiding Countries that in 2001 the number of AIDS patients increased more than two folds of the previous year according to the data submitted by the 31 provinces in China. According to the commonly used grouping method practiced internationally and the evaluated estimation by the specialists, the actual number of AIDS patients has already reached 200,000, and 80000-100000 are surviving with HIV/AIDS. At the moment, there are at least 50,000 cases of AIDS requiring treatment; however, up to the present, only some 200 cases can afford the specific anti-viral treatment.

Some published material shows that during recent years, there was a remarkable increase of the number of AIDS cases in China. Based on the statistic data and the analysis of the specialists, during the coming 5 years, with the exception of the fatal cases, the number of AIDS patients requiring treatment may approach 200,000.

Reportedly, many ministries and commissions of China are making efforts in multiple aspects to work hard for having more patients of AIDS to be properly treated. At the moment, the Ministry of Health is continuously making efforts for further reducing price of the imported anti-HIV drugs. The State Planning Commission, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, the General Tax Bureau, General Administration of Customs, SDA etc. are outspreading the issues of duty free import for antiretroviral drugs and the restriction of their price. Furthermore the related departments and offices of the government are also working hard to set-up the processes of producing domestic antiretroviral agents., 百拇医药
