Dr. Liu Gaifang, chief of the department of gastroenterology, the third hospital affiliated to the Hebei Medical University and his colleagues recently demonstrated in a report of their research that the widely used electronic gastroscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of upper digestive tract disease was also able to distinguish itself into full play for the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the larynx.

Liu Gaifang et al had used the Japan-made electronic gastroscope for the diagnosis and treatment of 34 patients with larynx disease. Most of the patients were those failed to exhibit a clear view on indirect laryngoscopy or those with large polyps which was not completely clamped out with the fibrolaryngoscope. Among them there were 5 cases with polyps of the vocal cord, 2 cases with vascular cancer of the vocal cord, one with paralysis of the left vocal cord, and 2 with foreign bodies in the piriform fossa (fish bone or date -kernel). The diagnosis and treatment with electronic gastroscope was carried out under sufficient anesthesia. The doctor was able to make continuous observations on the epiglottis, the vocal cords, glottis and bilateral piriform fossa without making the patient to cough and to have nausea. They accurately carried out biopsies to procure enough amount of specimens giving remarkably high positive rates. Dr. Liu Gaifang recommended that in comparison with the use of shoring laryngoscope, the diagnosis and treatment with gastroscope requires only sufficient superficial anesthesia over the laryngopharynx region; general anesthesia and hospitalization are not needed, which resulted in a remarkable reduction of the medical expense., http://www.100md.com
