In a retrospective study conducted in the Army General Hospital and the Army Hospital in Shenyang Military Region involving 1605 elderly patients with multiple organ failure (MOF) encountered from January 1995 to December 2000, the researchers discovered that pulmonary infection accounted for 73.1 % among the chief predisposing factors of MOF in the elderly.

The survey also disclosed that 99% of MOF patients were suffering from more than one kind of underlying disorders, while the majority had 2-3 kinds of illness, among them, the highest records were sufferers of 9 varieties of diseases, which were firstly headed by hypertension, coronary heart disease, chronic bronchitis and diabetes mellitus as the four major illnesses. Of the background disorders among the 1605 cases, the incidence of coronary disease was 56 %, that of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was 54 %, indicating the cardio-pulmonary disorders were the important pathological foundations of MOF in the elderly. Foreign literature also showed that heart failure and respiratory failure were mostly encountered in the elderly.

This study provided an important clue for clinical early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of MOF in the elderly; the lungs in the majority of the circumstances served as the initial organs of MOF, and the decrease of the incidence of MOF was only possible by effective control of pulmonary infection and prevention of the occurrence of respiratory failure. The mortality of MOF can be decreased by protecting the function of various organs especially the protection of renal function and the prevention of renal failure., 百拇医药
