Antibiotic intervention not necessary for group B
In China there is no need of antibiotic intervention for carriers of group B streptococcus (GBS). This was the conclusion reached at the special program of the "the Ninth National 5-Year Plan" state medical technology completed by the Beijing Children's Hospital, "the diagnosis of group B streptococcus infection during pregnancy and parity and its influence to the growth of fetus and the neonates". Research of this special topic also disclosed that in China the irrational application and abuse of antibiotics was a comparatively serious problem.
With the financial support of the national foundation of "9-5" tackle key problems in science and technology, the Beijing Children's Hospital, Beijing Hospital of Ob & Gyn, the Third Hospital of Beijing University and the Institute of Maternity and Child Care of Guangdong province etc. jointly carried out this study.
Research in pediatrics suggested that in China the clinical symptoms of GBS infection in the neonates was mild and there was no mortality; a preliminary analysis revealed that this situation was related to the higher titer of GBS specific antibody in vivo in the Chinese neonates than that found in the foreign countries and the extensive use of antibiotics as well as the racial factor. A bacteriostatic substance (chiefly the antibiotic components) detection with blood samples of 125 sick children and urine specimen in 34 cases performed in Beijing Children's Hospital revealed a positive rates of as high as 59.2 % and 94 %, which were remarkably higher than that found in the neonates in foreign countries. Similar results were also obtained in the Third Hospital of Beijing University. Additionally, in 40 women with denial of antibiotic use had the bacteriostatic substance in their milk as high as 37.5 %, a fact indicated a serious situation of irrational application and abuse of antibiotics (including the presence of antibiotics in the foodstuff). The related specialists reminded that this is a serious problem touching off our attention., 百拇医药
