In China there is one handicapped person in every 5-6 families, and in the whole country, 50 % of more than 600 thousands disabled persons were caused by diseases of the brain. A health education program focusing on the prevention and treatment of brain disorders organized by the Ministry of Health kicks off in Beijing recently. The purpose of this program is to initiate public awareness of accurate prevention and actively seeking medical care toward diseases of the brain. Dr. Ma Xiaowei, Vice Minister of Health has suggested the demand in detail for carrying out this health educational plan of 5 years.
Information from the Bureau of Disease Control, Ministry of Health indicated that in recent years, there is an increasing trend of the incidence of brain disorders in the whole country. It must be pointed out especially that different grades of cerebral lesions in sequence of neurovascular functional etiologies are present in more than 80 % among the elderly. Statistical data demonstrated that in 2001 the case fatality rate of cerebrovascular disease in China was 111.01/10,000 in the urban dwellers, accounting for 20.41% of the total mortality and 112.80/10,000 in the rural area, accounting for 18.95 % of the mortality. The number of fatality cases due to cerebrovascular disease was listed at the second place both in the urban and rural areas. At the moment, senile dementia, Parkinson's syndrome etc. caused by cerebrovascular accident, sequelae of stroke, reduced brain function etc. had already seriously affected the quality of life and living ability of the elderly in China., 百拇医药
