Experts warn that pig feces transmit viral hepatit
The researchers of the State Institute of Drug Control, Medical department of Peking University, and University of Amoy jointly pointed out that pigs as well as other animals being the hosts of hepatitis E virus and strict control of water source and enviroment contamination at the feeding lots must not be neglected.
The cooperative group collected 419 samples of porcine serum from the 8 regions, i.e., Beijing, Henan, Guangxi, Xinjiang, Zhejiang, Hebei, Guangdong, and Tianjin, 190 samples of bovine serum from the 3 regions, Beijing, Tianjin and Shanxi, 316 samples of caprine serum from Xinjiang and Shanghai and 115 samples of chicken serum. The results of detection revealed that antibodies of hepatitis E virus were absent in the caprine and chicken serum, the rate of positive detection of hepatitis E virus antibody was 6.3 % in bovine serum, 78.8 % in porcine serum. Intensity analysis of the antibody positive samples done at the same time disclosed that the antibody titers in all the positive bovine serum were relatively low, indicating the S/CO value of antibody titer being less than 5, while the antibody titer in the positive porcine serum was relatively high, the S/CO value was greater than 15 in 60 % of the positive samples.
The researchers further discovered that nucleic acid detection of hepatitis E virus in 263 samples of porcine serum showed positive results in 5 specimens. Cloning and sequencing analysis of the 5 positive samples showed that the homogeneity of the nucleic acid sequence was as high as 83 %~93 %, and the condition was similar to that of virus strain isolated from the patients with sporadic hepatitis E in China.
Professor Wang Youchun, who headed the list of the research group in the State examination bureau of pharmaceutical and biological products pointed out that the positive rate of hepatitis E antibody in piglets of younger than 3 months was approximately 10 %, however, the positive rate of virus nucleic acid was as high as more than 70 %, and in the adult pigs the hepatitis E virus antibody was more than 70 % with a positive rate of virus nucleic acid of only around 1 %.
