Since the discovery of the first case of HIV infection among the drug users in China in 1989, except for the provinces of Anhui and Jilin, intravenous transmission of HIV infection occurred in all the other provinces in China. In Xinjiang autonomous region where the first case of HIV infection was found in 1995, more than 6000 cases of HIV infected persons were reported just in a period of few years and the AIDS patients numbered more than one hundred. The region was then recognized as the area with the highest incidence of AIDS epidemics. An analysis of the route of HIV infection in Xinjiang region revealed that more than 95% of the infections were through the intravenous route. The earliest report of HIV infection among the drug users was from the province of Yunnan, where the epidemics has now expanded to the whole province from the initial counties in the border regions. The rate of HIV infection among the drugs users in various regions of the province varied from 1.1 % to 75 %. During the recent years, in the provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi etc. a rapid transmission of HIV infection appeared in the drug users. In Beijing and Chongqing etc. the HIV infected persons were also sorrowfully increasing.
The relevant specialists pointed out that at present the epidemic of HIV infection is considerably extensive with a tendency of accelerated spreading. The transmission of HIV infection is also increasing among the drug users as well as among their sexual partners.
