Dr. Long Long of department of cardiothoracic surgery, the second Xiangya Hospital, Southern Central University under the instructions of his tutor Professor Gong Guangpu, discovered during his research in the preparation of artificial cardiac bioprosthetic valve that the combined use of 2,3 butanediol (BD) and glutaraldehyde (GA) for the processing of tanned valve of bovine pericardium remarkably decreased the calcification and its immune inflammatory reaction with the host, thereby improved the quality of artificial bioprosthetic valve.
The results of the study revealed that in the GA group, the calcium content of bovine pericardium in 1,2 propanediol and 1,3 propanediol groups were notably higher than that in the control respectively and the BD groups (P<0.0012), and there was no significant difference between the control and the BD groups. The heat shrinkage temperature and the breakage intensity of trial sheets of bovine pericardium in the four groups under different method of processing showed no significant difference. The heat shrinkage temperature and the breakage intensity of the control group were respectively lower than those of the four kinds of reshaped groups (P<0.01).
