At the "The 2002 conference of influenza information" Dr. Yang Weizhong, responsible member of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that because of the Chinese influential situation in prevention and treatment of influenza in the world, as of this year, WHO will develop a project for influenza monitoring in a period of 5 years with the Chinese Ministry of Health. The project will monitor outbreak and case studies in 23 provinces, of which in the Southern region the monitoring will be carried out for the whole year. While in the North the period will last from October to March of the next year. At the moment, an overall instructional notion for the prevention and treatment of influenza is being formulating by this center and the bureau of disease control of the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Yang said that according to the systemic information of the 145 disease monitoring stations in China, from 1990 to 2001, the incidence of influenza was 30.03/100000~207.06/100000. As a result of multiple pandemics of influenza started in China in recent years, and the occurrence of avian flu in Hong Kong in 1997, influenza was listed as the communicable disease of focal point prevention and treatment in China in "the tenth-five year plan period". There was a rapid promotion of the comprehensive prevention and treatment measures and extension of the epidemic monitoring coverage as well as an intensified effort to carry out influenza vaccinations in many regions. A preliminary statistic review in Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Henan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Wuhan etc. showed that there were more than 810,000 inoculations of influenza vaccine in 2001., http://www.100md.com
