Professor Wu Zhongxue, doctorate tutor at the department of intervention radiology, Beijing Tiantan hospital recently adopted the technique of intravascular stent and successfully treated a patient with an already ruptured fusiform aneurysm of the intracranial vertebral artery.

The patient aged 37, had a history of headache for 7 years with sudden onset, nausea and then unconsciousness. The patient was admitted in coma, stiff neck and weakness of the extremities. Light perception was very weak and intra-cranial hemorrhage was manifested on CT scan. Pan-encephalography showed a specially featured fusiform aneurysm situated at the distal end of the right vertebral artery, with a length of the tumor of 18 mm and width of 6 mm and the diameter of the right vertebral artery of 3.5 mm. Professor Wu decided using the dilating stent for the treatment of this patient. The operation was done under local anesthesia. Through the puncture approach at the right femoral artery the directing cannula was introduced into the aneurysm, the a filiform catheter was inserted through the fusiform aneurysm and the bulb dilating stent was accurately placed at the site of the diseased focus, covering the two ends of the aneurysm. Thrombosis was soon formed in the turbulent flow inside the aneurysm which was then occluded and the operation was successfully completed. Follow-up study one month later showed no cerebral ischemia. Imaging study revealed disappearance of the aneurysm and unobstructed blood flow through the aneurysm carrying artery providing an adequate blood supply to the distal blood vessels.
