Sponsored by the international atomic energy agency and the Chinese government, co-sponsored by the 5 academic societies of league of global nuclear medicine and biology etc. and undertaken by Beijing Fuwai Hospital of Cardiovascular Diseases, the first international seminar of cardiovascular nuclear medicine was held recently in Beijing.
Nuclear medicine has already been in widespread application in cardiovascular diseases. Techniques of nuclear medicine can help evaluate blood stream perfusion, metabolism and function of myocardium, showing functional imaging instead of the anatomical morphological pictures. Along with the clinical application of single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET), radionuclide imaging has now already been the chief or the auxillary diagnostic method for cardiovascular diseases. Myocardial perfusion during exercise test is the most reliable non-invasive diagnostic method for coronary heart disease; more than 5000 cases underwent this examination in Fuwai hospital annually giving an accuracy of correct diagnosis of coronary heart disease in more than 90 % of the patients examined. Many patients not only had early diagnosis but also avoided unnecessary invasive tests. Pulmonary instillation imaging is able to accurately diagnose acute pulmonary embolism, and timely carrying out thrombolysis treatment saving life for many patients.
