【Abstract】 AIM: To study the relation between different infarct sizes and the expressions of CD11a, CD18, LFA1 as well as their positive cell numbers on leukocytes of peripheral blood in acutephase patients with cerebral infarction. METHODS: The expressions of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 on the polymorphonuclears (PMN), the mononuclears (MN) and the lymphocytes (LC) in peripheral blood were measured, by immunofluorescence phenotype and flow cytometry, in 30 patients with cerebral infarction within 72h after onset and 28 control subjects. The total positive cells (×109/L) of the expressions of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 on the leukocytes in peripheral blood were calculated and comparisons were made between the patients and the controls. RESULTS: The expressions of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 on the PMN, the MN and the LC in patients were higher than those in controls (P<0.05), but no significant difference was found between those with infarct sizes >10 cm3, the 5 cm3 -10 cm3 and the <5 cm3 (P>0.05). Great difference of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 expression on PMN was observed in patients with different infarct sizes, and between patients and the control (P<0.05). The number of positive cells was positively correlated to the infarct size ( r1 = 0.396, P<0.05; r2 = 0.987, P< 0.01; r3 = 0.794, P< 0.01). No significant difference of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 expression on MN and LC was found in patients with different infarct sizes (P>0.05), while significant difference was found between patients and the control (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The expressions of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 on the PMN, the MN and the LC in peripheral blood increases in acutephase patients with cerebral infarction, and the increased expression of CD11a, CD18 and LFA1 on PMN is correlated to the infarct size. ......
