    【Abstract】 AIM: To study the protective effects of COGBE on multiinfarction dementia (MID) rat model. METHODS: The multiinfartion dementia model was induced by injecting thromboembolus of the same kind of rats into the internal carotid artery.The protective effects of COGBE was observed by detecting the changes in the learning and memorizing abilities and biochemical metabolism in brain. RESULTS: All three doses of COGBE (10 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg) improved the learning and memorizing abilities by different degrees,which was confirmed in Morris water maze test. The escaping latency and the time for passing through target for the first time were shortened significantly. The biochemical assay showed that the acetylcholinesterase activity decreased and the lactic acid content increased in hippocampus and cortex in model rats. COGBE reversed these abnormality by different degrees. CONCLUSION: Ameliorating cholinergic nervous system function and restraining lactic acid content may be the active mechanisms of COGBE in improving the learning and memorizing abilities, protecting encephalon and preventing vascular dementia in MID rats. ......
