Comparative study on quality of life between army and air force veteran retirees

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To explore the difference of quality of life in veteran retirees between different military services. METHODS: 835 military veteran retirees in Xi¡¯an were enrolled and SFª²36 questionnaire was used in this study. RESULTS: The prevalence rate of cataract was 61.6% in air force retirees, significantly higher than that in the army retirees (33.4%) (P<0.01). While the army retirees¡¯ prevalence rate of prostate hyperplasia and diabetes mellitus was significantly higher than that of the air force retirees (P<0.05). Among the air force retirees, the population of good, middle and poor quality of life accounted for 39.4%, 57.3% and 10%, respectively. While among the army retirees, the percentages were 36.6%, 59.1% and 4.3%, respectively. The mental health in the army retirees was worse than that of air force retirees (P<0.05). All the social and demographical character of air force and army retirees was similar. CONCLUSION: There is significant difference in the distribution of the chronic diseases and mental health between the air force and army retirees. Different strategies and consultation for psychological health should be carried out to improve their quality of life. ......
