    Epidermal growth factor promotes the proliferation and secretion function of human embryonic pancreatic islets in vitro

    【Abstract】 AIM: To investigate the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the proliferation and secretion of human embryonic pancreatic islets in vitro. METHODS: Islets were isolated from pancreases of twelve human embryos and cultured in RPMI 1640 medium containing EGF (study group) or without EGF (control group). The percentage of islet beta cells was detected. The insulin content in the media, islet cells and islet beta cells insulin release were measured. RESULTS: By the end of culture, the percentage of islet beta cells was significantly higher in study group compared with that in control group. The insulin content of media and islet cells release was significantly higher in study group compared with that in control group. CONCLUSION: Results indicated that the addition of EGF to the media prolongs the survival time of islet cells and promote the proliferation and secretion of islet cells. ......
