【Abstract】 AIM: To investigate the correlation of βcatenin and matrilysin expression with the progression of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: High sensitive SP immunohistochemical method was used to detect the proteins of βcatenin and matrilysin in clinical specimens. RESULTS: In some cases of adenoma, early colorectal cancer, advanced colorectal cancer, abnormal βcatenin expression with loss of membranous immunoreactivity or cytoplasmic or nuclear staining was observed and the cytoplasm expression of matrilysin was demonstrated. The abnormal βcatenin expression decreased from normal muscosa, aberrant crypt foci, adenoma, earlycolorectalcancertoadvancedcolorectal cancer (P<0.05, respectively), and the positive expression of matrlysin gradually increased. The membranous expression rates of βcatenin gradually decreased with tumor cell dedifferentiation (P<0.05). Cytoplasmic or nuclear expression of βcatenin or matrilysin expression was not significantly associated with histological differentiation (P>0.05). The abnormal βcatenin expression and matrilysin positive rate in early colorectal cancer were significantly associated with the depth of invasion and metastasis (P<0.05, respectively). In early colorectal cancer, the matrilysin expression was not correlated with the membranous expression of βcatenin (P>0.05), while it was positively correlation with the cytoplasmic or nuclear expression of βcatenin (P<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION: βcatenin and matrilysin may play an important role in the carcinogenesis, infiltration and metastasis of colorectal cancer. ......
