Effects of passive smoking on the behavior of acute sleep deprived rats

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿AIM£º To investigate the effects of passive smoking (PS) on the behavior of sleep acutely deprived (SD) rats. METHODS: Forty-nine rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: group A: SD+PS 24 h, group B: SD 24 h, group C: SD+PS 54 h, group D: SD 54 h and group E: normal controls. Different periods of sleep deprivation were performed in the 5 groups using the ¡°flower pot¡± technique, and at the same time the stimulation of cigarette smoke was imposed on group A and group C. The emotional and behavioral alterations of the rats were measured by ¡°open field test¡±. RESULTS: The explorative behavior in the ¡°open field¡± of group B significantly increased compared with that of group E(P<0.05), while the explorative behavior of group D significantly decreased compared with that of group B(P<0.05). The explorative behavior and total distance of movement of group A significantly decreased compared with those of group B(P<0.05). The total distance of movement of group C significantly decreased compared with that of group D(P<0.05) while no significant difference was found in the explorative behavior of the two groups. CONCLUSION: With the lengthening of the time of sleep deprivation, the emotional and behavioral alterations of the rats tend to begin with a state of excitation, followed by inhibition. The PS exerts an inhibitory effect on the behavior of rats throughout the whole cause of sleep deprivation. ......
