【Abstract】 AIM: To study clinicopathologic significance of microvessel density (MVD) and the expression of CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in human thyroid tumors. METHODS: Expression of CD34 and VEGF in thyroid tumor tissues of 68 cases was determined by immunohistochemistry method. MVD counting and semiquantitation of VEGF expression were performed and analyzed in conjunction with the clinicopathological features of human thyroid tumors. RESULTS: The rate of positive VEGF expression was 74% (50/68) in the patients with thyroid tumors. MVD was significantly higher in positive VEGF expression thyroid tumors than in negative VEGF expression thyroid tumors (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: MVD and expression of VEGF remarkably increase in thyroid tumors. The expression of VEGF is a good indicator in assessing the prognosis of patients with thyroid tumors. ......
