【Abstract】 AIM: To observe the effects of simulated weightlessness induced by 21 d, -20° headdown tilt (HDT) on the cerebral water content and histological changes in rabbits. METHODS: The weightlessness simulation model was set up by use of HDT. Twentyfour healthy male rabbits were randomly divided into three groups of 8 each: 21 d weightlessness group, 45° HUT 2 h per day group (countermeasure), control group. After 21 d simulated weightlessness, the cerebral water content and histological examination were observed. RESULTS: ① There were no significant differences in the cerebral water content between the control, weightlessness and countermeasure groups. ② Under light microscope, no red blood cell effusion, blood vessel or cell spaces distention were found among all the three groups. No vacuoles or cellular swelling was found in brain tissues. CONCLUSION: The 21 d weightlessness simulation does not cause brain edema or histological changes in rabbits. ......
