【Abstract】 AIM: To study the effects of venlafaxine on cerebral ischemia. METHODS: The focal cerebral ischemia model was established by ligation of rat middle cerebral artery. Fourteen rats were used in this study and they were randomly divided into venlafaxine group (n=7) and control group (n=7). Neurological functions were measured at 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after ischemia. RESULTS: At 14 d and 28 d after ischemia, significant improvement of neurological function in venlafaxine group [(56±13) s, (70±13) s] was found by screen prehensile test, compared with those in control group [(38±14) s, (52±7) s] in (P<0.05), while no significant difference was observed by avulsing sticky label test between the two groups(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that venlafaxine can enhance the muscle strength after focal cerebral ischemia.
