【Abstract】 AIM: To explore the levels of serum basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and the tissue microvessel density (MVD) in nonHodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) patients with different clinical and pathological features. METHODS: In 32 NHL patients (13 newly diagnosed and 19 in remission after chemotherapy) and 10 healthy controls, ELISA was used to detect their serum level of bFGF and FⅧ RAG was used as the marker of endothelial cells to detect MVD in 20 cases of the 32 NHL patients and 10 cases of benign lymphadenopathy. The statistic t test was used to analyze the difference among different groups. RESULTS: The mean concentrations of serum bFGF in the untreated patients and patients in remission after chemotherapy were(7.6±1.2) ng·L-1 and (4.1±1.0)ng·L-1, respectively, which were higher than that [(1.7±1.4)pg·L-1] in healthy controls (P<0.05). The serum bFGF level in Tcell type NHL was significantly higher than that in Bcell type [(10.7±1.4) ng·L-1 vs (2.7±1.0)ng·L-1, P<0.05]. The mean MVD of the 20 NHL cases (39±18) was obviously higher than that in benign lymphadenopathy group (13±5, P<0.05) and the mean MVD in Tcell type NHL was significantly higher than that in Bcell type(47±15 vs 27±17, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The NHL patients, especially those with Tcell type NHL, have significantly higher serum bFGF levels and tissue MVD than controls. The data presented here strongly suggest that the bFGFmediated angiogenesis may closely be correlated with the pathogenesis and pathologic characteristics in NHL. ......
