Tissue microvessel density and levels of serum basic fibroblast growth factor in patients with nonª²Hodgkin¡¯s lymphoma

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To explore the levels of serum basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and the tissue microvessel density (MVD) in nonª²Hodgkin¡¯s lymphoma (NHL) patients with different clinical and pathological features. METHODS: In 32 NHL patients (13 newly diagnosed and 19 in remission after chemotherapy) and 10 healthy controls, ELISA was used to detect their serum level of bFGF and Fª²¢ø RAG was used as the marker of endothelial cells to detect MVD in 20 cases of the 32 NHL patients and 10 cases of benign lymphadenopathy. The statistic t test was used to analyze the difference among different groups. RESULTS: The mean concentrations of serum bFGF in the untreated patients and patients in remission after chemotherapy were(7.6¡À1.2) ng¡¤L-1 and (4.1¡À1.0)ng¡¤L-1, respectively, which were higher than that [(1.7¡À1.4)pg¡¤L-1] in healthy controls (P<0.05). The serum bFGF level in Tª²cell type NHL was significantly higher than that in Bª²cell type [(10.7¡À1.4) ng¡¤L-1 vs (2.7¡À1.0)ng¡¤L-1, P<0.05]. The mean MVD of the 20 NHL cases (39¡À18) was obviously higher than that in benign lymphadenopathy group (13¡À5, P<0.05) and the mean MVD in Tª²cell type NHL was significantly higher than that in Bª²cell type(47¡À15 vs 27¡À17, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The NHL patients, especially those with Tª²cell type NHL, have significantly higher serum bFGF levels and tissue MVD than controls. The data presented here strongly suggest that the bFGFª²mediated angiogenesis may closely be correlated with the pathogenesis and pathologic characteristics in NHL. ......
