Safety of postª²operative application of oxaliplatin combined with 5ª²FU/ in patients with colorectal cancer

    ¡¾Abstract¡¿ AIM: To investigate the safety of early application of adjuvant chemotherapy, oxaliplatin combined with 5ª²FU/leucovorin, in patients with colorectal cancer after radical colorectomy. METHODS: Thirtyª²six patients with colorectal cancer were randomized into two study groups. The treatment group received adjuvant chemotherapy using oxaliplatin combined with 5ª²FU/leucovorin on the 4th day after colorectomy; while the control group did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. The tolerances of chemotherapy, the impact on wound healing, and the change of ILª²2, sILª²2R in serum were determined. RESULTS: The healing condition of wound showed no significant difference between two groups. Chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting was reported in small numbers of patients in the treatment group, but was well controlled after antiª²emetic therapy. Neutropenia was not reported either in treatment group or control group. In addition, both groups showed the same change of ILª²2 and sILª²2R. CONCLUSION: Early application of adjuvant chemotherapy using oxaliplatin combined with 5ª²FU/leucovorin is beneficial to the patients with colorectal cancer who have underwent radical colorectomy. It has no influence on the patients¬ð healing ability and will not increase the incidence of subsequent symptoms after operation. Furthermore, adjuvant chemotherapy doesn't influence patients¬ð immune system and then will not reduce the body's antineoplastic ability. Futhermore, early application of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients after colorectomy can positively prolong the survival time and delay the recurrence. ......
