【Abstract】 AIM: To evaluate the value of intraoperative ultrasonography in nephrolithotomy for the complex renal calculus. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was done in 25 consecutive patients with complex renal calculus who had accepted nephrolithotomy under ultrasonic guidance. RESULTS: Nephrolithotomy was successful in all cases with the mean operative time of 110 min. Blood transfusion during the procedure was required in 3 cases, ranging from 200 to 400 mL. The B mode ultrasound during 2-6 months after surgery showed a 0.8 cm stone in only 1 patient. In the others, the calculus could not be seen in the postoperative examination. CONCLUSION: The nephrolithotomy under ultrasonic guidance for removing complex renal calculus was safe, effective and easy to manipulate.
