The winter bud of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., a perennial herb of the family Rosaceae.
Agrimony refers to several species. A. eupatoria, an herbaceous, hardy perennial that is native to Europe but is widespread in other northern temperate regions, where it grows in hedge banks and the borders of fields.

A. eupatoria grows to about 120 cm tall and has alternate feather-formed leaves that yield a yellow dye. The oval leaflets, about 2━6 cm long, have toothed margins. The small, stalkless yellow flowers are borne in a long terminal spike. The fruit is a bur about 0.6 cm in diameter and bears a number of hooks that enable it to cling easily to clothing or the coat of an animal.
A. gryposepala, a similar species, is widespread in the United States.

A. pilosa is grown from east Europe, Russia, to east Asia, including China and Japan. This perennial plant grows to about 0.6 m high. It is in flower from June to August, and the seeds ripen from August to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by bees and flies. The plant can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires dry or moist soil.
A. pilosa is grown everywhere in China. The rhizome is dug before the herb buds in winter or spring. Remove old roots and reddish brown pubescence from the rhizome, leave the young buds for use, dry them in the sun and grind into powder for use.
