从老布开始得知自己将被假释的那一刻起，他就恐慌不已，竟然妄想拿刀挟持狱友来逃脱假释的命运。结果老布还是走了，当看到他在公车上紧握的手以及害怕外界的眼神时，令人总有一种想哭的冲动，这明明就是一个被抛弃的孩子!正如瑞德所说，在监狱里，人人都需要他，但是到外面他就什么都不是了。讽刺的是，这个囚禁了他一辈子的监狱竟然被他称为“home”。如今，“家”遗弃了他，可怜的老布只能以伛偻之躯告别世界，只留下了“Brook was here”三个字。在影片后面，当瑞德获得假释后，他面临着与老布同样的现实，幸运的是他没有选择走老布的路，而是在老布刻下的字后加上了“So was Red”的话，然后踏上与安迪重逢的旅程。也许，这点是唯一能安慰观众的结局吧。

3 品位音乐
安迪每周都给州政府写信要求拨款增加监狱图书馆的设备，这样过去了6年，不堪其扰的州政府终于把一些旧书和用过的设备寄了过来。喜形于色的安迪趁看守去厕所的当儿，把他锁在里面，通过广播播放了捐赠的《费加罗的婚礼》。虽然所有犯人都听不太懂歌词内容，但是全被音乐深深打动了。
Guard: Andy, do you hear that?
(Andy locks the guard in the washroom and locks the door as well, and then broadcasts the opera The Marriage of Figaro.)
Guard: Dufresne. Dufresne! Andy, let me out! Andy? Andy?
Red: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared - higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away. And for the briefest of moments, every last man at Shawshank felt free. It pissed the warden off something awful.
Norton: Open the door. Open it up! Dufresne, open this door! Turn that off!
Norton: I am warning you, Dufresne, turn that off!
(Andy turns up the volume)
Hadley: Dufresne, you're mine now.
(Hadley breaks the window and opens the door)
Red: Andy got two weeks in the hole for that little stunt.
Hadley: On your feet.

这是整部电影最令人激动之处，美妙而激越的女高音在监狱上空回旋，狭窄的囚室、荒凉的空地，四处都翻涌着激动而沉醉的心灵。此时，镜头从广播室出发，然后是广场、木工房、医院、又是广场，然后再慢慢拉起，喇叭出现在画面之中，我们看到所有人似乎都呆在那里，聆听着那天籁之音。下一组镜头从每一个人脸上望去，观察着每个人的表情，一个黑人嘴里叼着的香烟还在燃烧，抬着头仰望那个传出美妙声音的地方；瑞德一副若有所思的表情，他知道能做出如此举动的只有安迪，可是他不知道这究竟为了什么。镜头切回广播室。安迪舒服地躺在那里，就如同一个在自家的卧室，享受美妙音乐的普通人。音乐通常是最难表达的东西，可是在这一组镜头中，摄影师很好地利用了人们的表情，表达出音乐的美妙，这一段是电影中最精彩的镜头，也是会让每个人热泪盈眶的镜头。
4 安迪的心声
斗转星移，转眼20多年过去了，有一天一个叫汤米的年轻人来了，他和安迪等人成了好朋友，并在意外听闻安迪的案件后说出了真正的罪犯。可是就在安迪满怀希望，以为自己可以出狱时，贪婪的监狱长却因为安迪一直帮自己洗黑钱想囚禁他一生。监狱长杀死了汤米并关了安迪两个月的禁闭。绝望的安迪决定孤注一掷，和瑞德的最后谈话中，我们可以窥见他那坚定而挣扎的内心。
Andy: My wife used to say I'm a hard man to know. Like a closed book. Complained about it all the time. She was beautiful. God, I loved her. I just didn't know to show it, that's all. I killed her, Red. I didn't pull the trigger but I drove her away. That's why she died, because of me, the way I am.
Red: That don't make you a murderer. Bad husband, maybe. Feel bad about it if you want to, but you didn't pull the trigger.
