【Abstract】 AIM: To probe into the protective influence on the mechanical and immune barriers exerted by recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) at ileum in rats with obstructive jaundice. METHODS: In common bile duct (CBD)ligated Wistar rats, morphological changes in ileac mucous membrane, sIgA variation in ileac juice and altered bacterial translocation were observed and compared before and after rhGH administration. RESULTS: CBDligated rats had thinner ileac mucous membrane [(232±22) μm vs (362±43) μm] and shorter villi [(158±22) μm vs (254±39) μm]. Meanwhile, sIgA concentration in ileac juice dropped [(70±14) mg/L vs (162±32) mg/L] and bacterial translocation rate increased (3/12 vs 0/15). After using rhGH administration for 1 week, the ileac mucous membrane of CBDligated rats get thicker [(308±34) μm vs (232±22) μm] and the villi get longer [(216±29) μm vs (232±22) μm] and stronger. Microstructure of ileac membrane get comparatively normalized. sIgA level in ileac juice rose [(114±18) mg/L vs (70±14) mg/L]. Rate of bacterial translocation decreased (2/15 vs 3/12). CONCLUSION: Rats with obstructive jaundice suffer from morphological and immune abnormalities in ileac membrane. rhGH administration can correct these abnormalities and afford a good protection on impaired mucosal and immune barriers in rats with obstructive jaundice. ......
