ABSTRACT: Objective To investigate the surgical treatment of horseshoe kidney and compare the advantage, disadvantage and the indications of 3 approaches. Methods From 1960 to 2003, 39 patients with horseshse kidney were operated in our hospital. Of them 9 cases were treated by lion approach, 13 by upper transperitoneal approach and 19 by lower transperitoneal approach. Results Division of isthmus was performed in all cases. Compared with the other two approaches, the lower transperitoneal one had better exposure, less trauma, less complication rate (10%), shorter operative time [(178±24.1)min] and shorter postoperative hospital stay [(10±1.4)d]. Conclusion Lower transperitoneal approach has more advantages than the other two approaches and can be used in all patients with any complication of horseshoe kidney. ......
